What I Believe

I guess I believe some things that, frankly, are not easy to believe.

I believe that in the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist, the bread and wine which is consecrated by the Catholic priest is no longer bread and wine! It has truly become the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of our Lord. Sounds crazy, but I believe it.

I believe that the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick are gifts of God’s mercy which bring the forgiveness of sins, the peace of God, and prepare the soul for heaven.

I believe that I was “ontologically changed” at the Sacrament of Holy Orders to be more configured to Jesus Christ (though the way I just tripped over my own sneakers and dropped my mug of tea, I could see how that one is particularly hard to accept).

I believe that at Baptism and Confirmation, the soul receives an “indelible spiritual mark” that makes it Christ’s, even if the person decides not to practice the faith.

I believe that the Sacrament of Matrimony is a gift from God offered to a man and woman who are committed to be together for life, ready to welcome children, and open to becoming with their children a visible image of the Holy Trinity on earth.

I also believe what it says in the Book of Genesis, that it is not good for man to be alone. And so the Lord gave us friendship, companionship, tenderness and compassion so that we can have real deep relationships of love with people of either gender, relationships that do not need to be sexual in nature and can be just as satisfying as a marriage.

I treasure my faith in the Sacraments but I also understand that such faith has never been easy to come by. It is a gift from God that is nourished by daily prayer. I pray that more people will come to the joy I have found through my faith in the Sacraments. And I pray that all of us human beings learn to love and accept each other, even when we disagree.
